Thyroid disease (hyper/hypothyroidism)
Thyroid disease encompasses hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone → slowed metabolism, bradycardia, CNS depressant sensitivity, rare myxedema coma) and hyperthyroidism/thyrotoxicosis (excess thyroid hormone → tachycardia, hypertension, arrhythmias, thyroid storm risk). Dental relevance: (1) uncontrolled hyperthyroidism has catecholamine sensitivity → epinephrine can trigger tachycardia/hypertension/arrhythmia/thyroid storm, (2) severe hypothyroidism has exaggerated sensitivity to sedatives/opioids → respiratory depression risk, and (3) stress/infection can precipitate thyroid storm or myxedema coma in uncontrolled disease.
