Chronic hepatitis B (CHB)
Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) = persistent HBV infection (HBsAg positive ≥6 months). Severity ranges from inactive carrier to active hepatitis to fibrosis/cirrhosis. AASLD guidance (2018, updated 2025) provides management framework. Dental takeaway: CHB alone usually does NOT change routine dental care — what changes care is: (1) degree of hepatic dysfunction (normal LFTs vs impaired vs cirrhosis), (2) current antivirals and kidney safety (tenofovir nephrotoxicity + NSAIDs), and (3) infection control (standard precautions, staff HBV vaccination, surface cleaning — HBV survives on surfaces ≥7 days).
