Active hepatitis B/C
Active hepatitis B/C creates TWO separate dental risks: (1) TRANSMISSION risk — HBV/HCV are blood-borne; correct approach is STANDARD PRECAUTIONS for all patients, not special isolation (CDC); (2) HEPATIC IMPAIRMENT risk — active hepatitis ranges from minimal impairment to cirrhosis/decompensation, changing analgesic/sedative safety. BNF: keep prescribing minimal in severe liver disease; problems mainly in jaundice/ascites/encephalopathy. Key principle: infection control is STANDARD; prescribing caution scales with liver disease SEVERITY.
