End-stage renal disease (hemodialysis/peritoneal)
End-stage renal disease (ESRD) = severe loss of kidney function requiring hemodialysis (HD) or peritoneal dialysis (PD). Dental relevance: (1) bleeding risk on HD days from systemic heparin during dialysis, (2) severe comorbidity burden (HTN, CVD, anemia, uremic platelet dysfunction), (3) drug clearance issues requiring dialysis-aware dosing (some drugs removed by HD → dose AFTER dialysis), (4) AV fistula/graft arm protection, and (5) scheduling invasive procedures on the day AFTER hemodialysis when heparin effect is minimized.
