Asplenia / functional asplenia
The spleen clears encapsulated bacteria. Asplenic/hyposplenic patients risk OVERWHELMING POST-SPLENECTOMY INFECTION (OPSI) — rapidly progressive, potentially FATAL sepsis from Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae type b, Neisseria meningitidis. UKHSA/NHS: rapid recognition + urgent antibiotics for suspected sepsis. DENTAL TAKEAWAY: asplenia does NOT usually change routine dentistry, but changes URGENCY/TRIAGE when systemic infection suspected; reinforces prevention + prompt management of oral infections. Asplenia is NOT a standard indication for routine dental antibiotic prophylaxis.
