Enamel
Why this matters
Enamel is the tissue you will spend your career cutting, etching, bonding to, bleaching, sealing and replacing — and it is the only tissue in the body that has no cells inside it and cannot mount any biological response to anything you do. Every property that makes it useful comes from how it was built: one cell layer, three stages, and a mould at the end of each cell.
The big picture
One epithelial cell layer builds enamel in three stages: secretory sets the shape, transition remodels the cell, maturation removes protein and completes the mineral. The stage that fails decides the defect. Everything else — rods, crystallites, the dentino-enamel junction, the incremental lines — is the permanent record of that process.
