Why this matters
Almost every structure you will treat for the rest of your career is built in a four-week window between the third and eighth weeks after fertilisation, by a cell population that starts at the back of the neural tube and walks to the front of the face. Dentine, pulp, cementum, periodontal ligament, the jaws, the articular disc of the temporomandibular joint and the sensory ganglion behind every block you give, which is part crest and part placode (Card 4), all come from it. Enamel does not.
The big picture
One migrating cell population fills five bulges on the side of the embryo's head while five bumps around the primitive mouth grow together in front of it, and two shelves then swing up behind them and zip shut from the front backwards. Everything a dentist calls a craniofacial anomaly is one of those events failing.
Crest fills the arches, prominences build the lip, shelves zip the palate front to back.
