Lipids and lipid metabolism
Why this matters
The potency of the local anaesthetic in your cartridge is set by how readily it dissolves in lipid. The two commonest drug classes you prescribe act on a lipid signalling cascade. And the interaction most likely to harm a patient of yours involves a statin and an antibiotic you might reach for when they say they are allergic to penicillin. Lipids are not a peripheral topic for dentistry.
The big picture
Fat is the body's dense, anhydrous fuel store, and because it will not dissolve in blood, everything about lipid biology is a transport problem. Lipoproteins solve it for the circulation, carnitine solves it at the mitochondrial membrane, and bile salts solve it in the gut. Learn the transport and the metabolism follows.
Fat stores more because it is both energy-dense and dry — and every step of handling it is really a solubility problem being solved.
