Collagen and structural proteins
Why this matters
Everything that holds a tooth in its socket is built from one protein family, assembled by a pathway with more post-translational steps than almost any other protein in the body. Each of those steps is a disease waiting to happen, and several are things you will do to a patient on purpose — etching dentine, moving a tooth, taking one out. This lesson is where structural biochemistry becomes hand skills.
The big picture
A collagen chain is made long, modified heavily, folded from one end, trimmed at both ends, then assembled and welded together outside the cell. Roughly a quarter of what the ribosome makes is scaffolding that gets discarded. Because so much happens after translation, collagen diseases are rarely 'the gene is wrong' — they are usually 'one modification step failed'.
