Why this matters

Enamel dissolves for a chemical reason, not a moral one. Whether a tooth loses mineral in the next twenty minutes is decided by the pH of the fluid touching it and by how much calcium and phosphate that fluid already holds. Every prevention conversation you will ever have — sugar frequency, saliva, fluoride, erosion — is this chemistry applied.

The big picture

Atoms bond because of electrons. Uneven sharing makes molecules polar. Polarity makes water the solvent that biology runs in. Dissolved substances have concentrations, and one of them — the hydrogen ion — is so important it gets its own logarithmic scale. Buffers resist changes on that scale. In the mouth, that entire chain ends at a single question: is the plaque fluid still saturated with respect to tooth mineral?

Bonds make polarity, polarity makes water, water carries ions, hydrogen ions set pH, buffers defend pH — and pH decides whether the tooth dissolves.
