Genetic testing and biotechnology
Why this matters
A patient arrives with opalescent teeth, a child with multiple missing teeth, a family asking whether the next baby will be affected. You will not order these tests, but you will be asked what they mean, and you will write the description that decides which test gets ordered. Choosing the wrong test misses the diagnosis; misreading the report frightens a family for no reason.
The big picture
Every genetic test answers one shape of question. Is a known sequence present? Amplify it. What are the letters? Sequence it. Is a whole chromosome missing or extra? Karyotype it. Is a piece of a chromosome duplicated or deleted? Microarray it. The technique follows the question, and the report is an interpretation, not a verdict.
Match the question to the resolution: chromosome-sized problems need a chromosome-sized test, letter-sized problems need a letter-sized test.
